Watching Jets on Grays and Torreys

This one rounds out our 14er adventures for the summer. This hike is a well known fairly straight forward pair of 14ers. We’d been looking at them a lot from various points around summit county, and decided that it’d be nice to go hike them. It was definitely Fall heading into Winter up there – golden ground cover, everything was pretty dry. Nevertheless, Maple managed to find a few streams and splash around in them. She had a great time, as well as logged her 2nd and 3rd 14ers.

Notable events:

  • Had to navigate around a mountain goat blocking the trail. We essentially just waited for it to wander off and start napping on a sunny rock before proceeding.
  • While we were on the summit of Grays, two fighter jets buzzed right by the summit. Literally right beside as well – if you were to string a rope between the two summits and pull it really taught, both jets would have easily limboed below it. Incredible timing to be on the summit while that happened – I could easily image that it’ll be the only time I actually look downwards at a plane in flight while standing on the ground.

This post also has a couple bonus photos of lovely fall colors from the Salt Lick trail near Wildernest.

Happy 2019 Summer everyone!
